National Biomechanics Day is celebrated annually to help youth
understand what biomechanics is and how it’s understanding is used in
real life. Longwood University, Drs. Stephanie Playton and Tim Coffey
reached out to Charlotte County to collaborate on working with Grade
8 students to help celebrate and understand how their learning in
Physics connects to understanding how the human body (anatomy)
moves.
In collaboration with Mrs. Lipscomb, Central Middle School’s Science
Teacher, Drs. Playton and Coffey led a two-day pre-activity with LEGO
BricQ to study the Laws of Motion. The students built a gymnast car to
study how Laws of Motion affected the distance the gymnast car
moved based on different angles of release (potential and kinetic
energy).
As a follow-up to celebrating National Biomechanics Day, Central
Middle School 8 th graders will be visiting Longwood University on April
10 th . During the visit they will see Biomechanics in action as they
explore the lab and technologies that support the understanding and
study of biomechanics while exploring hands-on with tools such as the
Zero Gravity Treadmill, balance plate, 3D Motion Analysis, Golf
Simulations, and more!
The CMS FFA had fun releasing the Brook trout that they hatched and raised this school year. Students were also able to collect and sort micro invertebrates with the Southside Soil and Water Conservationist to learn more about the environment they would be releasing the trout they have cared for all school year.

They enjoyed networking with students from across the region and are looking forward to working together to prepare for next year’s competition.
Congratulations on your Rookie of the Year award, Abigail Yarosh, Berkley Johnson, and Declan Davis!
Mrs. Christy Shook and Mrs. Lisa Finnegan recently collaborated on a small project with a big impact. Mrs. Shook went to Honduras in January and wanted to take along something made by the students to give to the children there. She provided the supplies to Mrs. Finnegan's Art classes and the students were taught how to weave bracelets. The mission to make and send these bracelets was shared with each student and right away their humanitarianism kicked in. Each bracelet took around 2 hours to weave from start to finish and before long Mrs. Finnegan was being handed bracelets by the droves. The icing on the cake was seeing the faces of the children who received these gifts from CMS students all the way in Honduras! Thank you to all who helped make this mission a success!
Mrs. Finnegan's Art 7 students earned a paint party for their achievements. This group of students demonstrated an amazing work ethic all trimester long. Their paintings were Valentine's Day themed and their individual creativity really shines through in each piece. Mrs. Finnegan received positive feedback from the students about how much they enjoyed this painting! She wants to express her gratitude to them for a trimester well done!

Breakfast of Champions is an exciting event that takes place twice a school year at CMS. This event is a way to celebrate students who have gone above and beyond throughout their time at school. These outstanding students may be recognized for being hardworking, well-behaved, or for showing kindness to others. The teachers and staff at CMS have the opportunity to nominate students for the Breakfast of Champions event.
During the first Breakfast of Champions held on November 3, 2023, students were treated to a delicious breakfast and had the chance to socialize with other students from their grade level as well as other grade levels. It was a great opportunity for the students to make new friends and celebrate their accomplishments together. After breakfast, the selected students were presented with a certificate that included their name, the reason for their selection, and the teacher who nominated them.
The staff at CMS is honored to be able to recognize these students and celebrate their achievements.
